Jem's review of Hidden Magic by Stephany Wallace

How would you feel if you discovered magic was real, and the kind of powers that until now you’ve only read about are actually part of this world?

Cynwrig "Cyn" Bressall is a Celtic warrior with the unique ability to harness and wield Druid magic in a way never before seen. Making him the only Druid Warrior to ever exist. After surviving a horrible night that began the extinction of his race, Cyn has spent the last two thousand years searching for the only man that can lead the Order of the Druids and mend the scars marring his soul. Instead, his quest leads him to a woman whose essence is unlike anything he's ever felt.

Orphaned as a baby and raised by her loving but over protective grandfather, twenty-three year old Briana "Bri" Anwell has led an isolated life. Friendless and stuck in a job with no prospect, the self proclaimed flower child finds solace in her only friends. Books. And imagines an adventurous life in a magical world where anything is possible.

So when a sexy stranger suddenly appears in her world as though he stepped out of her favorite story, she dismisses him as a figment of her imagination. But soon she realizes he's so much more than he seems. He signifies everything she's fantasized about, but is there a place for her in his extraordinary world?

So back in October, brand new author Stephany Wallace released her debut novel, Hidden Magic. Whilst I posted my reviews on Amazon & Goodreads, I was lack in posting here on the blog, however after speaking to me fellow St. Sisters today they reminded me that this review should be up here as it's such an awesome book, plus it's on a 99c/p sale at the moment so what better time is there than to tell you about this fabulous book so you can go out and grab it.

As this is Stephany Wallace's debut novel I have to say that I was pleasently surprised as it is a very well written and engaging read. She has definitely exceeded my expectations for what I expected from her first novel as most authors first works are not necessarily the best of their books as they're still at that learning stage (I'm only saying this as a reader and being my own personal view on some first works that I've read). However if I didn't already know that this was Stephany's first published book then I would never have known as I feel like she's already reached her stride with writing and is comfortable at her job as it came through in the story and writing.

Hidden Magic drew me in right from the get go and kept me enthralled throughout. From the different points of views, to the flashbacks to previous times, the varied and amusing characters to the many wonderful and beautiful places that were visited through the story, I found I couldn't put the book down until I'd finished it.

It is a NA paranormal romance so be prepared for some steamy scenes (there is a clean version available if that is what you prefer) however as we're no saints here at St. Sisters Book Reviews (see what I did there huh 😉) it didn't bother me in the slightest reading those parts.

There were definitely some laugh out loud moments for me as I love how some of the characters are portrayed. The main female, Bri, talks out loud to herself and has internal dialogues with herself, I actually do this too which is why I think I laughed so much and there were points where I really did see a bit of me in Bri (a little bit scary actually as I've realised how much I do talk to myself!) . You may think that would be annoying to read about, but Stephany Wallace has dealt with it so well that its not irritating at all and you find yourself connecting to Bri.

The lead man, Cyn, well what can I say? He is HOT (yes with capitals) HAWT & hoooot. He is a 2000 year old warrior druid, who doesn't look a day over 25 and with some amazing dimples that I was wishing I could just reach through the pages and touch (amongst other things of his that I would also love to touch 😜). At first I wasn't sure if he would be my kind of male lead but once he and Bri were together I loved the way he grew and changed, but still kept real to himself that I found myself falling for him right alongside Bri. He also has one yummy, scrumptious and cheeky brother too, Art, who I wouldn't mind bumping into one night either.

The various locations that are visited in the book has really made me want to go and visit them some day. The way Stephany has described them made me feel like I was there. I never even knew that some of these places existed until I read this book and I don't know whether Stephany has been to them herself or just researched them but she has made them sound magical and I hope I will be able to see at least a few of them one day, although unfortunately it will be without Cyn and the portals he uses to get to them.

I'm really looking forward to reading the next part of the journey in this series and seeing what Stephany Wallace brings us next. This book gets the full five stars from me & a strong recommendation that you give this a read too.

All's fair when you're in love with War.

For seventeen-year-old Mia Ahlström, a world ruled by order is the only world she allows. A lifetime of chore charts, to-do lists and study schedules have helped earn her a spot in Redwood State University’s engineering program. And while her five-year plan includes finding her very own happily-evah-aftah, years at an all girls’ boarding school left her woefully unprepared for keg parties and co-ed extracurricular activities.

So nothing surprises her more than catching the eye of Tyr Fredriksen at her first college party. The imposing Swede is arrogantly charming, stubbornly overprotective, and runs hot-and-cold in ways that defy reason . . . until Mia learns that she’s fallen for the Norse God of War; an immortal battle deity hiding on Midgard (Earth) to protect a valuable Asgardian treasure from a feral enemy. With a price on his head, Tyr brings more than a little excitement to Mia’s rigidly controlled life. Choosing Tyr may be the biggest distraction—or the greatest adventure—she’s ever had.

Perfekt Order Excerpt:
“Can I come in?” Tyr asked. His hands were still open—maybe to prove he was unarmed. Not that it mattered much—a guy who could fly and battle a creature that size wouldn’t need a weapon to debilitate me.
I gave him my finest stink eye.
“Please, baby. Let me explain.”
My eyes darted wildly between the forest and my boyfriend. There was a beast in the woods, but there was a man unaffected by gravity on the porch. One who had most definitely lied to me. I wasn’t sure which unnerved me more.
What I really wanted was to understand; understand how Tyr had done what he’d done; understand how he and Freya seemed human enough, but obviously weren’t; understand how that wolf was so powerful; understand how, if Tyr was an alien or a superhero or a mutant or whatever he was, how we could possibly have any kind of a relationship; understand why everyone but me had Henrik’s absolutely awesome lighters.
“I’m coming inside.” Tyr walked slowly, palms up, and stepped through the door. Then he walked backwards to the closet, where he hung up his crossbow and the two space guns. He shut the door gently, entered a code that I assumed locked the room, and closed the cover on the keypad.
I still hadn’t moved.
“Can I touch you?” he asked.
I nodded. Tyr slowly moved to my side. He took one of my balled fists and pulled me from the door.
“No more secrets,” he vowed. He pulled the lighter out of his back pocket and threw it off the porch. “Henrik didn’t make a special lighter. This is all me.”
He held out one hand and muttered something in Swedish I didn’t understand. Light shot from his hand and I spun around to follow its trajectory. It hit what looked like a clear screen at the edge of the woods, and traced an arc around the house in a half-dome, encasing the property in a silvery coating. Tiny spots floated gently from the dome, like thousands of luminescent snowflakes, and soon the ground around the house was covered in a glittery powder. Tyr snapped his fingers and the powder disappeared. Everything was as it had been—it was as if the whole night had never happened.
My knees buckled as the room started to spin. Tyr caught me just before I hit the ground. He swept me up in his arms and carried me to the couch.
“Okay, prinsessa. Time for the talk.”
He tucked a heavy throw around my legs and sat next to me. He kept one of his shoulders an inch from mine. I cautiously turned my head to appraise him. On the outside, nothing had changed. His eyes were the same midnight blue, his jaw the same perfect square, and the enormous arms folded calmly across his chest were the same ones I loved to curl up in.
But everything felt different. I realized I had no idea who this man actually was, where he came from, and what else he was capable of. The only thing I knew for sure was that I needed answers. Real answers, this time. No more secrets.
I drew a shaky breath and spoke the words that would change my life forever.
“Who are you?”

5 favorite things for Linda Thomas-Sundstrom

2) love
3) diamonds (and other things that sparkle)
4) horses
5) castles

In Salem for business, werewolf Kade Willis's new hostess is an intriguing woman whose species begins with the same letter of the alphabet. She's a WITCH. The way Loren Beck Broom gets his fur twitchy might be due to the laws of animal attraction. It might be the way she handles her magic when dark forces come calling. Or . . . she might just truly know the ins and outs of a decent lust spell that will require him to be "de-witched."

Loren Beck Broom felt a disturbance in the air and exhaled a long, slow breath. It was no meteorological ripple that she noted. Something more out of the ordinary than the usual out-of-the-ordinary stuff was causing a flux in the atmosphere. The back of her neck had chilled up.
She tossed a look to the front door of her establishment, then glanced to the roll-top desk where the few guests that came her way registered. Taking her time, she walked to the door, flipped the switch beside it that turned on a small vacancy sign, and stepped out on the porch.
Eyes closed, she sent her feelers out.
The newcomer was male, she sensed, and around thirty-years old. Strong, in the way he pushed through the dark. Steel-willed, for taking on Salem at this time of year.
More description filled in as if the guy stood right beside her. Tall. Handsome. With the confidence of a physician or an attorney.
She stopped there. If her new visitor was the latter, she could look forward to complaints. Bed was soft. Breakfast took too long. Coffee wasn’t hot enough. The rooms were too frilly for any self-respecting man to make himself at home in. Could he get meals 24/7? Did she have an aspirin for his after-flight hangover?
But that wasn’t quite all. Something else underscored those easier to read things about this customer. What was it?
Raising her right hand, she drew an invisible symbol in the air and opened her eyes to study it, aware of something else woven in the wind blowing through her thick black curls. There was a trace of sulfur in that wind.
Two steps forward took her to the front steps. The presence of sulfur was never good, which made this a bad wind, with trouble written all over it. She was almost sure her new guest wasn’t the cause of this new ripple in the night, per se, though he was likely part of the disturbance. In any case, the three blocks he was hiking to get to her were about to turn into the longest three blocks of his life if he wasn’t careful.

Linda Thomas-Sundstrom is an award-winning author of contemporary and paranormal romance novels and novellas with books published by Kensington Brava, Amazon Montlake, Harlequin Nocturne, Harlequin Desire, and GothicScapes.

"At the Women’s College of Salem, Sarah hopes to meet like-minded students of The Craft. But after joining a coven, the other girls seem to have it in for her and she can’t figure out why . . .  . . . until Tanner, the new, cute IT guy, helps uncover her family’s dark secret. Sarah will have to learn to trust Tanner if she’s to survive a killer freshman year. And Tanner must accept his paranormal powers to save Sarah when the blood moon rises at Samhain, the witch’s Halloween."

Go to Salem, they urged.
You’ll love it, they promised.
It will be fun, they said.
They lied.
Tanner rubbed his eyes and tried to focus on a string of computer code. Some fun. He could have stayed in Alabama if he’d wanted to be stuck in a boring tech job. Sighing, he shoved out of his chair and walked to the window. In the darkness of late afternoon, a light shone in the library next door on the campus quad.
She was there again. Sitting alone at a table, her long, brown hair swept to one side, her enchanting profile glowing like a halo of warmth against the New England chill. Damn, the unbearable cold had turned his brain to poetic mush. She was just a girl, and he’d had more than his fair share of dating last year. Before everything had turned to shit.
He’d prove she was nothing special. Tanner abruptly closed down the computer, grabbed his coat, and walked down the semi-deserted hallway. “See you in the morning,” he called to his boss.
Mr. Higginboth didn’t bother looking up from his hunched position over a computer. “Night,” he mumbled, pushing up wire-framed glasses from the bridge of his nose.
Tanner shuddered. Would that be him thirty years from now? Buried in an academic environment, wearing old-man woolen sweaters and deciphering endless lines of computer code with steadily declining eyesight? Not how he’d envisioned his future. He closed his eyes and remembered the thrill of catching his one and only touchdown pass—the cheering crowd, outrunning the opposing team’s defenders, the ball tucked safely in his arms, and crossing the goal line. Score!
How things had changed in one year. And not for the good.
Bitter wind slammed into his body as he exited the tech lab. He clutched his leather jacket tighter, glumly trying to imagine how much colder Salem would be in winter. Back home, he’d still be in short sleeves and enjoying sunshine.
His right knee throbbed, as it always did in cold weather. Damn nuisance. You’d think he was ninety instead of nineteen. He walked as quickly as he could with the bum knee, grateful for the warmth of the library as he pushed open its heavy, wooden doors. The cozy scent of old books and weathered oak lifted his sour mood.
Quickly, he scanned the towering rows of books and the whispering crowd of students at the center tables. In the far right corner, on the second level, she was bent over a book, her long hair a veil, covering her face.
Tanner inwardly groaned as he climbed the stairs, trying to avoid wincing at the darting pain needling through his knee. A gaggle of girls passed, shooting him sly glances. He winked at the boldest one, who had flaming red hair, dressed all in black, and sported a large pentacle pendant. Back home, she’d have stuck out like a black widow on a bed of white linen. But at the Women’s College of Salem, she was part of a notable minority that flaunted a belief in witchcraft. She smiled, but her eyes held no warmth. She turned her back and elbowed the girl nearest her orbit. “He’s cute but . . . all crippled up. Too bad.”
His face warmed. The remark had been whispered, but it was loud enough to carry—as the girl no doubt intended. He was used to being called cute, but not to people wondering at his injury. At least, not that he’d overheard. Way to build his confidence as he approached the girl to whom he’d been drawn for the past few weeks.
He squared his shoulders, determined not to let the offhand comment ruin his plans. If he’d learned nothing else from his old football coach, it was to persevere, no matter the obstacles. Still, he was used to outmaneuvering three-hundred-pound linebackers, not pathetically limping like an old man as he climbed a set of stairs. All while a group of girls insulted his dignity.
The girls went their way, chattering, never sparing a glance behind them. Amazing—not in a good way—that he’d gone from a rising football star to nearly invisible.
Different. A tiny flash of red on the floor caught his attention. Tanner bent over, picking up a small, black feather with a skein of red floss clumsily woven into its spine. A few inches of the red thread formed a tiny circle, perhaps large enough for a small wrist. Some kind of Native American bracelet, perhaps? He looked around, but nobody caught his eye. It probably belonged to one of the girls who had laughed at him. Too bad. He wasn’t going to search them out and ask. He shrugged and stuffed it into his jacket pocket, intending to throw it in the nearest trashcan.
At last, he reached the top. Tanner gripped the railing, collecting his breath and his pride. Once both were again intact, he walked toward the mystery girl, his footsteps creaking on the old pine flooring, but she didn’t look up from the book held in her hands, a heavy, dusty tome—Salem Witch Trials and Mass Hysteria: 1692—1693.
Tanner flicked his index finger against the book’s spine to get her attention. “A little light reading?” he joked.
Eyes as gray as a November sky regarded him with a decided chill. He was definitely striking out with the ladies today.
Her voice was smooth and cold as ice. “Nothing light about the killing of innocent women.”
“That’s what you call irony.” Tanner pulled out a chair across from her and sat, uninvited. “You writing a history paper on the trials?”
She cocked her head to one side and regarded him with a raised brow. “Yes. Do you need to use this book?”
“Oh, no, I’m not a student.”
Wariness sharpened her delicate features, and her fingers gripped the edge of the table. Real smooth there, Tanner. Now you’re scaring the women away.
“Then who—”
“It’s okay,” he said quickly. “I work here. In the IT department. My uncle—Ralph Landers—is the college dean.”
Her death grip on the book relaxed a fraction.
“I can prove it.” He dug in his coat pocket and fished out his employee ID. “See? I’m totally legit.” He slapped the card on the table and slid it toward her.
“Tanner Adams,” she read aloud, comparing his face to the awkward employee picture. “Computer tech, WCS.”
The way she said his name with her proper, reserved New England inflection was strangely sexy. She pushed his ID card back on the table, and their fingers touched. Chills, the good kind, vibrated through his entire body.
