Karen Tomlinson is the author of The Goddess and the Guardians series of Young Adult fantasy books. Book one A Bond of Venom and Magic will be released October 14th 2016.
Karen has always been an avid reader. Her taste in books is eclectic but she likes nothing better than an exciting fantasy, set in a new and magical world. She lives in Derbyshire, England, with her husband, twin girls and her dalmatian, Poppy. Karen trained as a nurse and currently works as a resuscitation and clinical skills trainer, this involves training a wide variety of health care professionals and medical students in acute patient care. In addition to writing, and reading whenever she can, Karen likes to keep active. She has been training at Shotokan karate since being thirteen, likes walking, mountain biking and (for something completely different) cake decorating. She is currently working on book two in The Goddess and the Guardians series.
About me!
As soon as I could read I spent hours getting lost in the new worlds books could give me. Spending my pocket money had to be done (obviously) but not on sweets, well, not many…I spent my money on books. Back then it was Enid Blyton’s Famous Five which sparked my young mind. I didn’t rest until I had the whole set, then I migrated to the secret seven…(there was no Harry Potter then) As a teenager I would trawl through all my mum and dad’s discarded books. It was probably highly inappropriate for a thirteen year old to be reading swoony Mills and Boon romances followed by Ian Flemming, Alistair Maclean and Wilbur Smith!
Because I read anything and everything I could get my hands on back then, I now have an eclectic taste in books. I will read anything that catches my eye and absolutely love illustrated book covers! In my late teens I discovered fantasy and that genre has stayed my firm favourite. I am and will always remain a complete sucker for a fantasy with kick ass characters and worlds steeped in magic and romance!

Loren Beck Broom felt a disturbance in the air and exhaled a long, slow breath. It was no meteorological ripple that she noted. Something more out of the ordinary than the usual out-of-the-ordinary stuff was causing a flux in the atmosphere. The back of her neck had chilled up.

She tossed a look to the front door of her establishment, then glanced to the roll-top desk where the few guests that came her way registered. Taking her time, she walked to the door, flipped the switch beside it that turned on a small vacancy sign, and stepped out on the porch.

Eyes closed, she sent her feelers out.

The newcomer was male, she sensed, and around thirty-years old. Strong, in the way he pushed through the dark. Steel-willed, for taking on Salem at this time of year.

More description filled in as if the guy stood right beside her. Tall. Handsome. With the confidence of a physician or an attorney.

She stopped there. If her new visitor was the latter, she could look forward to complaints. Bed was soft. Breakfast took too long. Coffee wasn’t hot enough. The rooms were too frilly for any self-respecting man to make himself at home in. Could he get meals 24/7? Did she have an aspirin for his after-flight hangover?

But that wasn’t quite all. Something else underscored those easier to read things about this customer. What was it?

Raising her right hand, she drew an invisible symbol in the air and opened her eyes to study it, aware of something else woven in the wind blowing through her thick black curls. There was a trace of sulfur in that wind.

Two steps forward took her to the front steps. The presence of sulfur was never good, which made this a bad wind, with trouble written all over it. She was almost sure her new guest wasn’t the cause of this new ripple in the night, per se, though he was likely part of the disturbance. In any case, the three blocks he was hiking to get to her were about to turn into the longest three blocks of his life if he wasn’t careful.

5 Favourite things

1.      Movies. Especially sci-fi/fantasy, paranormal/supernatural, and comic-based movies. I also count those types of TV shows, ie Supernatural, Jessica Jones, Arrow etc.

2.      Books. Does that surprise you? Hehe

3.      Pets. I love my pets, and can’t wait to get more. We already have 1 dog, 2 cats and 3 snakes. We also want another dog, horses, chickens… we want a menagerie!

4.      Quiet times with my fiancé and our daughter, or just one-on-one time with either of them. I don’t care if it’s at home or out. “Us time” is always magical.

 

5.      House planning. Sounds weird, I know. But I love looking at houses for sale, especially ones with floor plans, and imagining what furniture would go in it, themes, and yes, even making my own floorplans. I have considered doing interior decorating, and haven’t yet ruled out chasing that path.

Darkness surrounded her, smoke and the metallic scent of blood filled her nostrils. Panicked screams and bellows echoed around her as she fumbled about. Large, leathery wings sprouted from its back, the bony frames licked by flames that seemed to come from the creature itself. It was a nightmare summoned from the bowels of Hell, just one of many. If she didn’t stop it, they’ d consume the world, at the word of one scorned witch. She needed to get to the root of the problem, Hilana, before it was too late.

“Morgan!”

She opened her eyes at Caleb’s call, his face filling her field of vision. He pursed his lips and frowned, and it took her a moment to realize she must have fallen asleep and called out in a dream.

“Morgan, you were having a pretty bad nightmare, what happened?”

“It wasn’t just a dream; it was a foreshadowing.”

“That bad, huh?”  Caleb sat on the window seat next to her. 

“I don’t know what Hilana will promise them, but the demons will devour the world for her. She’s beyond seeking simple revenge. She has been twisted by her own magic and foul attitude into something truly evil.”

Caleb whistled. “So it’s a good thing Junie returned while you were sleeping.”

Morgan sat upright. “What did she find out?”

“You’re right, she isn’t just after simple revenge. Junie was able to get close enough to the sigils to look them up in the books now she’s back. It’s not looking good. They’re cacodemon sigils. She thinks Hilana will trade them free reign to create havoc, as long as they first destroy everyone who has done her harm.”

Morgan’s throat constricted that the mention of cacodemons.  “She’s crazy.”

Caleb nodded. “That was Siobhan’s diagnosis as well.”

“When does Junie think Hilana will summon them?”

“At the full moon on Friday.”

“Damn. That doesn’t give us long. Any suggestions on preventing the summons to begin with?”

 

“You mean besides burning down the house with Hilana in it?”
