Magic. Romance. Rivals. Perfect for fans of Throne of Glass, Falling Kingdoms, and Tamora Pierce.
Before the age of seventeen, the young men and women of Jerar are given a choice —pursue a trade or enroll in a trial year in one of the realm’s three war schools to study as a soldier, knight, or mage… For fifteen-year-old Ryiah, the choice has always been easy. Become a mage and train in Combat, the most prestigious faction of magic. Yet when she arrives, Ry finds herself competing against friend and foe for one of the exalted apprenticeships. Everyone is rooting for her to fail—first and foremost among them is Prince Darren, the school prodigy who has done nothing but make life miserable since she arrived. Will she survive, or will her dream go down in flames?

She survived a trial year at the Academy of Magic, but that was the easy part…
Now sixteen-year-old Ryiah is an apprentice of Combat, her school’s most notorious faction. When she finishes, she will be a war mage, but in order to do so, she has to survive four years traveling across Jerar, training with a master she hates, her old nemesis, Priscilla, and Prince Darren, her sometimes-rival sometimes… more? Ry’s new apprenticeship is nothing like what she prepared for. War is on the horizon and her lessons aren’t just for practice anymore. It’s time to fight.

Welcome to the Candidacy. Where dreams go to die. Twenty-year-old Ryiah is a black mage of Combat, but she’s not the Black Mage. Yet. She’s had her eyes on the legendary robe for as long as she can remember, and in just one year, she will have a chance at her country’s prestigious—and only—tourney for war mages... Too bad she is going up against a certain prince—the one person she has yet to beat. The Candidacy finally arrives and a winner is robed, but something dark is lurking in her kingdom’s midst. Rival nations are closing in, and it’s time to make an alliance. Unfortunately for Ryiah, that’s only the beginning. The worst enemy resides in the palace.

He’s the Black Mage and she’s the traitor to the Crown. Ryiah’s world was shattered the night she discovered King Blayne’s nefarious plans. Now, she has to betray the one she loves most in order to save the realm from war. Torn between love and duty, Ry finds herself on a perilous mission to help the rebels and convince the kingdom of Pythus not to honor its pact with the corrupt king of Jerar—all the while deceiving the most powerful mage in the realm, the very man sworn to protect the Crown and hunt the rebels at all costs: her husband. She’s one step ahead, but sooner or later the curtain will fall. Sooner or later, she’ll have to fight. Witness the epic conclusion of The Black Mage series, and see just how far one girl will go to save her kingdom and the boy she loves—even when that boy has become the enemy.

Prince. Prodigy. Mage. Perfect for fans of Throne of Glass, Falling Kingdoms, and Tamora Pierce.

This prequel novella is set before the events of First Year (The Black Mage Book 1), following Prince Darren as a child through adolescence and his first run-in with Ryiah at the Academy of Magic. Readers discover the dark backstory between the two princes and their father, as well as the ensuing events that shaped Darren into the Academy’s most prodigal mage.

Olga's review of Dark Dreams and Dead Things

Dark Dreams and Dead Things, book 2 in the Dead Things Series
by Martina McAtee

17-year-old November Lonergan spent her whole lifel feeling like an outsider; like she was different. She was right. She’s a reaper like her mother; like her two cousins, Kai and Tristin. The supernatural world believes they are part of a prophecy to save them from an evil known as the Grove. Ember just wants to survive high school and fix the fallout from bringing back her friend.

Old enemies are lurking; waiting for their opportunity to strike but the pack has a new problem. A group of legendary hunters has resurfaced, threatening the reapers and anybody who stands with them. They are making good on their threats too; attacking those closest to the pack.

Their only hope of defeating the Legionaries involves trusting a stranger to perform a dangerous spell to advance Ember and her cousin’s powers. But Ember has a secret; a secret she can’t tell the pack. One that leaves the pack vulnerable.

An attack on pack allies, leaves one member of the group injured and another missing, along with a mysterious girl named Evangeline who may play a bigger part in this than any of them realize. As the Legionaries are closing in, the pack must trust their enemies, enter hostile territories, and play a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a psychopath. Their entire plan lynches on a dangerous bargain, but rescuing one member of the pack could mean losing another in their place…possibly forever.

This is a 5 star book

This is book 2 in Dead Things Series.  You most indubitably need to read the first book right now.   Martina is a new author to me, but after reading the first book in this series (Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things) I became a fan for life.  First of all let me just say that I am very much in love with the writing style.  It has an easy cadence and drew me in instantly.

Plot is pretty complex and very nicely done.  This is paranormal/urban fantasy therefore the world is already set, right. Ok now that all that is outta the way, even though it's great, my favorite part about this book was the characters.  To me this is definitely a character driven story, their inner struggles and the way that they deal with the situations that arise made this journey a fantastic one.  Our main trio that the story is interweaved around, Ember, Kai and Tristin, are the descendants of the goddess Morigan. They are the reason this story happens, but even though they share a destiny/cause/fight whatever you want to call it, others in the book seem just as important and just as well developed.   Our Trio are a part of a pack that's made up of all kinds of lost souls.  There are shifters and fae and reapers and humans and witches and more.  The pack is one big, happy, frustrating family all living under the same roof in a house run by their Alpha Wolf Isa.  Here are a few of the characters that made an impression on me

Kai and Rhys ~  I love their love so much, love the swoon worthy relationship and the struggle that Kai went through to get what he wanted.

Mace ~ I just feel like Mace is such a lost soul.  Don't understand his actions at all in book one, it becomes more clear here, but I just feel like there is so much more to discover about him

Ember ~ This poor girl is so scared of her powers and the fact that her newly found family and their lives will crumble around her that she makes awful decisions, but that is mostly why I like her so much

Tristin and Ember ~ I love the tension and the crazy teenage behavior these two display.  I can't even tell you why it just tickles me silly!

Aaron ~ he was just briefly introduced in book one but from the very first chapter with him in it I fell in love with him.  It must be how candid he is and feels like he is so good for Ember.

These are just a few.  You must go and discover these characters for yourself, there will be no disappointment.

This wonderfully and intricately created story by Martina is one of the best I've read in a good long time.

Since this is book 2 in a series I'm purposefully vague on the goings on.  You have to read book one first ;)

Jem's review of Hidden Magic by Stephany Wallace

How would you feel if you discovered magic was real, and the kind of powers that until now you’ve only read about are actually part of this world?

Cynwrig "Cyn" Bressall is a Celtic warrior with the unique ability to harness and wield Druid magic in a way never before seen. Making him the only Druid Warrior to ever exist. After surviving a horrible night that began the extinction of his race, Cyn has spent the last two thousand years searching for the only man that can lead the Order of the Druids and mend the scars marring his soul. Instead, his quest leads him to a woman whose essence is unlike anything he's ever felt.

Orphaned as a baby and raised by her loving but over protective grandfather, twenty-three year old Briana "Bri" Anwell has led an isolated life. Friendless and stuck in a job with no prospect, the self proclaimed flower child finds solace in her only friends. Books. And imagines an adventurous life in a magical world where anything is possible.

So when a sexy stranger suddenly appears in her world as though he stepped out of her favorite story, she dismisses him as a figment of her imagination. But soon she realizes he's so much more than he seems. He signifies everything she's fantasized about, but is there a place for her in his extraordinary world?

So back in October, brand new author Stephany Wallace released her debut novel, Hidden Magic. Whilst I posted my reviews on Amazon & Goodreads, I was lack in posting here on the blog, however after speaking to me fellow St. Sisters today they reminded me that this review should be up here as it's such an awesome book, plus it's on a 99c/p sale at the moment so what better time is there than to tell you about this fabulous book so you can go out and grab it.

As this is Stephany Wallace's debut novel I have to say that I was pleasently surprised as it is a very well written and engaging read. She has definitely exceeded my expectations for what I expected from her first novel as most authors first works are not necessarily the best of their books as they're still at that learning stage (I'm only saying this as a reader and being my own personal view on some first works that I've read). However if I didn't already know that this was Stephany's first published book then I would never have known as I feel like she's already reached her stride with writing and is comfortable at her job as it came through in the story and writing.

Hidden Magic drew me in right from the get go and kept me enthralled throughout. From the different points of views, to the flashbacks to previous times, the varied and amusing characters to the many wonderful and beautiful places that were visited through the story, I found I couldn't put the book down until I'd finished it.

It is a NA paranormal romance so be prepared for some steamy scenes (there is a clean version available if that is what you prefer) however as we're no saints here at St. Sisters Book Reviews (see what I did there huh 😉) it didn't bother me in the slightest reading those parts.

There were definitely some laugh out loud moments for me as I love how some of the characters are portrayed. The main female, Bri, talks out loud to herself and has internal dialogues with herself, I actually do this too which is why I think I laughed so much and there were points where I really did see a bit of me in Bri (a little bit scary actually as I've realised how much I do talk to myself!) . You may think that would be annoying to read about, but Stephany Wallace has dealt with it so well that its not irritating at all and you find yourself connecting to Bri.

The lead man, Cyn, well what can I say? He is HOT (yes with capitals) HAWT & hoooot. He is a 2000 year old warrior druid, who doesn't look a day over 25 and with some amazing dimples that I was wishing I could just reach through the pages and touch (amongst other things of his that I would also love to touch 😜). At first I wasn't sure if he would be my kind of male lead but once he and Bri were together I loved the way he grew and changed, but still kept real to himself that I found myself falling for him right alongside Bri. He also has one yummy, scrumptious and cheeky brother too, Art, who I wouldn't mind bumping into one night either.

The various locations that are visited in the book has really made me want to go and visit them some day. The way Stephany has described them made me feel like I was there. I never even knew that some of these places existed until I read this book and I don't know whether Stephany has been to them herself or just researched them but she has made them sound magical and I hope I will be able to see at least a few of them one day, although unfortunately it will be without Cyn and the portals he uses to get to them.

I'm really looking forward to reading the next part of the journey in this series and seeing what Stephany Wallace brings us next. This book gets the full five stars from me & a strong recommendation that you give this a read too.

Drakkar by Sandi Bischoff release day blitz

Drakkar ~ Beyond the Lie
Book three
Dark Order of the Dragon Series
Author : Sandra Bischoff
Genre : Paranormal / Fantasy

~ Blurb ~

Drakkar Dragoni, the only son of Princess Absinthe Dragoni, always believes what his mother tells him.
Humans are nothing more than cattle bred to nourish their kind, and her half brother, Jared Bonatelli, stole a kingdom which is rightfully hers. Drakkar vows to right this wrong, even if it means Jared dies by his hand.
But what if none of it is true?
What if this is his mother's biggest lie yet?
Who can he turn to?
Who will help him escape the prison within his own home?

~ Excerpt ~
The gods must have been on his side for once. When they got to Serenity’s house, her mother was asleep. There were no awkward introductions and no explanations as to why he needed to stay there till the next night. Nope nothing like that. Instead, Nettie whisked him to the lower level in the immense home and led him to a cozy nook of a guest room, far away from any windows.
Flipping on the light, she set about pulling blankets and pillows from the closet, tossing them on the full size bed across the room. Drake took advantage of her distraction and sat, watching her. She was nothing like the women he was accustomed to. That was saying a hell of a lot given the only female he was repeatedly subjected to happened to be Absinthe. With her as a role model, he’d been spoon fed manipulation and hatred since the crib and there was no end to it in sight.
He put a hand on the pile of pillows and linen beside him. “Exactly how many of these do you think I need?”
“Oh, is there not enough?” She turned to face him, blowing some stray hair out of her eyes. “I can probably find some more.”
“No, I think you have enough to smother me to oblivion right here. I’m good, thanks.” He chuckled.
“What? I figured since I don’t have a coffin, at least I could create a comfortable cocoon for you this way.”
“Cocoon? What the-  Serenity, I’m not a caterpillar. And I certainly don’t sleep in a coffin, geez. Friggin’ Hollywood.”
Nettie frowned, crossing her arms over her chest. “Hello! Joke! I’m only trying to make you comfortable.”
“Oh.” He patted the mattress beside him. Serenity flashed one more look of annoyance before sitting. “As long as we just keep sunlight away, I’ll be fine. The room has no windows, so we’re golden right now.”
“You’re sure? You don’t need anything else? How about something for that headache? I’m sure I can find some aspirin or something. Just give me a second to scrounge some up.” Nettie stood and sprinted for the door, only to have him snag her wrist, preventing her from leaving.
“Like I told you before, I’ll be fine.” He yawned. “Thanks for letting me crash here. I appreciate it. You don’t even know me. I could be a monster, yet you trust me in your home.”
He pulled her closer until she stood right in front of him. Cupping his cheek in her hand, Nettie bent till they were nose to nose. “Drakkar, you aren’t a monster. We met tonight for a reason and I have to believe it’s because I’m supposed to help you somehow.”
He gazed deeply into her eyes. She meant every word she said, believed it even. What if it was true? What if he was dropped there by someone or something so they could meet? But why? So many damn questionst but no answers.
“You know, if I decide to kill everyone in this house, there’s nothing you can do to stop me.”
She nibbled her lip, still cupping his cheek. “Think so?”
He nodded. “Bet your life on it.”
Nettie leaned closer. Their lips were a breath apart. “That’s a bet I’d make any day.”
“Oh yeah?” His own voice was a mere whisper.
“Yup. I have a crossbow and I know how to use it. I’ll stake your ass before you could blink those pretty blue eyes of yours.” Serenity pulled away from him and headed for the door. “Just hit number one on the intercom if you need anything.” The door closed quietly behind her.

Author Bio:
Karen Tomlinson is the author of The Goddess and the Guardians series of Young Adult fantasy books. Book one A Bond of Venom and Magic will be released October 14th 2016.
Karen has always been an avid reader. Her taste in books is eclectic but she likes nothing better than an exciting fantasy, set in a new and magical world. She lives in Derbyshire, England, with her husband, twin girls and her dalmatian, Poppy. Karen trained as a nurse and currently works as a resuscitation and clinical skills trainer, this involves training a wide variety of health care professionals and medical students in acute patient care. In addition to writing, and reading whenever she can, Karen likes to keep active. She has been training at Shotokan karate since being thirteen, likes walking, mountain biking and (for something completely different) cake decorating. She is currently working on book two in The Goddess and the Guardians series.
About me!
As soon as I could read I spent hours getting lost in the new worlds books could give me. Spending my pocket money had to be done (obviously) but not on sweets, well, not many…I spent my money on books. Back then it was Enid Blyton’s Famous Five which sparked my young mind. I didn’t rest until I had the whole set, then I migrated to the secret seven…(there was no Harry Potter then) As a teenager I would trawl through all my mum and dad’s discarded books. It was probably highly inappropriate for a thirteen year old to be reading swoony Mills and Boon romances followed by Ian Flemming, Alistair Maclean and Wilbur Smith!
Because I read anything and everything I could get my hands on back then, I now have an eclectic taste in books. I will read anything that catches my eye and absolutely love illustrated book covers! In my late teens I discovered fantasy and that genre has stayed my firm favourite. I am and will always remain a complete sucker for a fantasy with kick ass characters and worlds steeped in magic and romance!
