Resist Review

RESIST by Jeffery Martin Botzenhart

Screenshot_20170409-100029.jpg

This was such an amazing read!
It is set in Europe that is on the brink of WWII, our protagonist a German soldier named Rutger has been given a task by his commanding officer.  This mission finds him in Vienna, where most of the story takes place.  I felt instantly connected to Rutger because right away you could tell that he was a gentle soul.  He was definitely one of my favorite things about this novella.
Rutger finds that he has an unlikely and unusual ally in the form of a mysterious woman.  I love the fact that there is a woman who seems capable, smart and totally kick ass.
I really love the tension and secrecy of the time period too.  This is a spy/mystery novella so I will not say anything else because I fear I will spoil you.
This novella was easy to read, flowed seamlessly and had me turning the pages with no regards to my daily chores.  Engrossing, that is why I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes spy novels or WWII period novels or anyone interested in the affairs of the heart.  Great, really great and fast read.

Cover reveal of Naomi by Mya O’Malley

Cover Reveal: Naomi by Mya O'Malley

We here at St. Sisters Book Reviews are proud to present the cover for Naomi by Mya O’Malley, scheduled to release on March 30th! This paranormal romance is the sequel to Maggie, which Mya released in August 2016 and was one of my favourite books of last year. Check out the amazing cover below

Naomi by Mya O’Malley

Naomi has a knack for attracting attention from ethereal beings—whether she wants it or not. Newly engaged to her sexy neighbor, Bryce, she has little time to celebrate and plan for her upcoming wedding, because no sooner does she wrap up a heartbreaking cold case than she finds herself right back where she started, searching for answers alongside ghostly spirits. This time, however, Naomi learns that things are not what they seem as a man from her past quickly becomes her worst nightmare. If she’s not careful, this man might crush her hopes and dreams forever as he proves to be her most difficult opponent yet. Still, Naomi tries to focus on her relationship with Bryce. Can it withstand head games and cruel intentions? Naomi makes it her mission to keep Bryce and his daughter safe from harm, but will true love be tough enough to withstand her adversaries? Naomi must keep her eyes wide open and question everything— and everyone—in order to survive.

Excerpt:

Memories of the not so distant past slammed Naomi. Images of Ryan and Maggie . . . Maggie. The ghost that had all but consumed her. Maggie had reached out to Naomi, demanding peace. Naomi admitted to herself that she had become obsessed at that time in her life. Preoccupied with putting both Maggie and Ryan to rest. Luckily, Bryce was loyal and patient to the core during the first hectic months of their new relationship. What would he say now, knowing that a spirit was back? Knowing that this time it wasn’t the sweet spirit of a girl named Maggie or a quirky, kindhearted man that needed her help? This time it was worse, far worse. This time the spirit was unsettled, tortured—and to make matters even daunting . . . He was her ex-boyfriend.

Jem's review of Maggie by Mya O'Malley

maggie

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to share your home with an unearthly spirit who can’t find closure? Living on the edge of a cemetery with souls dating back to the 1700s would be enough to spook anyone, but Naomi finds it oddly romantic, and becomes inspired to write her next novel. Why not, when her muse, Maggie, calls to her from beyond her own window? After all, the story couldn’t possibly be as complicated as Naomi’s own love life. Torn between Ryan, the mysterious and seemingly perfect man she just started dating, and Bryce, the sexy single dad who recently moved in next door, Naomi must navigate the tangled web of dating—all while trying to solve the mystery of Maggie’s death. When things turn dangerous, Naomi quickly learns whom she can trust and, more importantly, whom she can’t. Will she be able to write Maggie’s story and finally give Maggie the peace she deserves?

So I've just finished reading Maggie by Mya O'Malley and I just fell in love with this seat gripping, suspenseful book.
I love paranormal books, when I say love I'm not kidding as about 95% of the books I read are paranormal, but I have never been a fan of books with ghosts in so I went into reading this book with trepidation. I don't know what I was so worried about as this book was awesome.

Naomi, who is the main character, was a sweet, but stubborn (in a good way) female lead. She was determined not to back down from her story or the investigation and I admired her for that as no matter how dangerous it got for her she was going to see it through to the end.

I don't want to mention any of the other characters as I feel that it could give away spoilers, but each and everyone that we were introduced to had a part to play in the story and they were all characters that were fleshed out & had substance to them. One of my pet hates are secondary characters who are flimsy and are just there in a story because the author needed to fill it out. I'm happy to say that Mya has not fallen foul to that in this book, or any of her other books which I've read so far.

This really was a beautiful story which I enjoyed reading. It kept me on my toes as just when I thought I knew what was going to happen next we're thrown one curveball after the other. I really had no idea how the book was going to end and it had me on the edge of my seat right to the very end. That made a change as normally I find I can guess where the book is heading, but there really was no chance of that with Maggie.

This is definitely a book that I'll be going back to re-read, and as someone who's not a fan of ghost stories, that's high praise from me indeed. Maggie gets the full five stars from me, so why don't you go & try it out yourselves and see what an amazing read this is.

Excerpt:

She gasped for breath, tried to steady her pulsing heart. Naomi squeezed her eyes shut as she felt the ghost touch her face, turn it to the side. Naomi cried out, fear pumping through her body. For the first time she wondered if this spirit was capable of violence, capable of harming her. It was time. She needed to see her face. Opening her eyes slowly, Naomi gasped. Clear blue eyes met hers. Eyes that held so much sorrow it nearly brought Naomi to her knees. She was stunning, even in her ghostly form.   Purple dress cursive writing

Some tales as old as time have deep, dark secrets that are never meant to be uncovered. Jackson, a recently separated man, steers clear of women, even his sexy southern co-worker, Kristen. An unlikely friendship between the two begins as they partner up to solve a cold mystery, one dating back to 1871. The seaside pub in which they are both employed becomes a setting of intrigue and danger.

What starts out as an intriguing way to pass the time becomes an obsession of sorts as Jackson bonds with the spirit Mille, an agonized soul who’s seeking closure and true love at a deadly price. This jealous spirit will stop at nothing to see that Kristen is no longer a threat in her manipulative plan.

Add to the plot a beautiful, mysterious stranger named Emily, who captures Jackson’s heart but leaves him wanting more. Jackson’s got his hands full of women with issues. Will Mille find that true love is more than meets the eye or is she destined to spend eternity trapped in a house filled with heartache?

"Do you truly believe in ghosts? Do you think it's possible that Millie's is haunted?" Jackson couldn't shake the vision in the window, but his stubborn head told him there were no such things as ghosts.
"Ooh, yes, I do, and how cool would it be if Millie's was haunted?" Kristen's eyes glazed over.
"Well, that all depends on the spirit in question. It could be cool or it could be terrifying," Jackson added. Did he just admit to being scared?
"That's kind of a sexy, a big guy like you admitting to fear," Kristen chuckled.

Do you believe that some souls are destined to be together, even through hardship and deceit?

After 9/11, Declan’s heart is torn between wanting to stay with Morgan and needing to fight for his beloved country. Knowing that the future may be un-certain, he kisses his fiancée goodbye and focuses on his mission until that dark day from which he will never fully recover. Injured in Afghanistan, De-clan has lost more than part of his leg, he’s lost part of himself, now plagued in grief and guilt. How could he possibly ask Morgan to take care of him for the rest of his life, being nothing but a burden to her? Which would be more heartbreaking, feigning his own death or bringing her un-happiness every day? If only he could eradicate her from his mind and be at peace with his decision.

Morgan prays day and night for Declan’s safe return, but when his letters stop coming, Morgan knows in her heart that she has lost him forever. Morgan has a hard time believing in fate and destiny after her fiancé is taken from her. With Declan gone, Morgan’s hope for true love is destroyed, but eventually she finds comfort in the arms of another. Morgan’s new love knows that her heart belongs to Declan, but will do anything in his power to stop the two from reuniting. Will Morgan eventually be able to move on, or will Declan haunt her dreams forever?

He had come close one too many times during those frightening first months back home from the hospital. Internal strength and perseverance must have been by his side, for each time his dark thoughts took over, a stronger presence took hold of him. Fear had gripped him many times in his past, but what worried him most, what scared the heck out of him, was the fear that he would forget her face, her warm smile, the mischief in her sparkling eyes, the sound of her voice. It had been a grueling decision to cut Morgan off, but it was made and that was final. He wouldn't put her through the burden of caring for him, no way.

Jem's review of Hunted By Magic by Jasmine Walt

With the sudden disappearance of Iannis, the Chief Mage, Solantha has erupted into pandemonium. Citizens are rioting in the streets, the Mages Guild is on a misguided warpath, and shifters and humans are fleeing the city in droves. Ridden with guilt, Sunaya defies the Mages Guild and goes off in search of Iannis, trekking into dangerous, uncivilized territory to try and make things right. But Sunaya's relationship with Iannis isn't the only thing at stake -- if she doesn't find him soon, the Resistance might just succeed in plunging the Northia Federation into a devastating and bloody civil war.

I'm in love with the series again. Let's just say that this book has found it's way back and is running with the story again as the first book did. It didn't drag at all and kept me entertained through the book, in fact I had to tell my other half to shut up several times as he kept trying to talk to me whilst reading. Note to all non book nerds everywhere, do not talk to someone who is deeply into a book as the reply may not be pretty! I promise I've made it up to him though ;)

I think that Naya has started to grow and mature in this book, I have to admit that I was starting to get a bit irritated with her in Bound by Magic, she was running off on her own, not really working as a team and forgetting some pretty important things. She has redeemed herself in my eyes though & I'm loving her again just as I did in the first book. I also loved that Fenris had a bigger role to play in this book and that learnt his secret, or at least one of them as I think he may have a few more in the Dark cupboard.

Annia also had a much bigger role in this book and I do like her, but my only criticism would be that I'm not loving her yet as I feel that I'm not connecting with her completely. I am hoping though that she still has a big part to play in the next book, and hopefully some of that will be kicking her sisters butt as that really needs to be done.

We're also starting to get somewhere with the feelings between Naya and Iannis, although not completely there yet. There was one very hot scene in this book, which I'm hoping we may see more of in future books. They language also got more colourful in this book, but that doesn't bother me at all, I don't really have the sweetest of tongues myself.

I'm so glad that this series has got its pizzazz back, and will just take the second book as hopefully a very small blip in what is looking to be a great series. I'm looking forward to the next book, I'm just hoping it comes soon, and hopefully it'll be a longer book too.

Jem's review of Burned By Magic by Jasmine Walt

In the city of Solantha, mages rule absolute, with shifters considered second-class citizens and humans something in between. No one outside the mage families are allowed to have magic, and anyone born with it must agree to have it stripped from them to avoid execution.

Sunaya Baine, a shifter-mage hybrid, has managed to keep her unruly magic under wraps for the last twenty-four years. But while chasing down a shifter-hunting serial killer, she loses control of her magic in front of witnesses, drawing the attention of the dangerous and enigmatic Chief Mage.

Locked up in the Chief Mage’s castle and reduced to little more than a lab rat, Sunaya resists his attempts to analyze and control her at every turn. But she soon realizes that to regain her freedom and catch the killer, she must overcome her hatred of mages and win the most powerful mage in the city to her side.

Let me start of this review by saying how difficult I can find it to write a review when I've really enjoyed a book and just want to jump into the next one in the series and forget everything else. This is one of those books and as soon as I've finished writing this I am diving straight into the next and everything else will have to go do one until I've finished that!

I really enjoyed this book. It contains all my favourite things, shifters, magic, a steampunk feel to the setting, a spunky, kick ass female lead and a hot, mystery male where you can just feel the sexual tension between the two characters sparking off the page.

This book was recommended to me on Amazon as it's similar to other books I've read. The great news is that it's also available on Kindle Unlimited, which I think is a great lending service that Amazon runs (and also helps to curb my terrible buying habit when it comes to books)

The main character in this book is a shifter called Sunaya, or Naya which is the nickname she goes by. She is a hybrid, not a full blooded shifter and her form is a Jaguar, or a Panther as she prefers to be called. She's working as an enforcer in a world where humans, shifters & mages coexist, albeit not necessarily happily. The action and the mystery, which is the main theme running through the series, kicks of straight away and dragged me straight into the story that I didn't want to put it down. The side characters in the book, be they friend or for, also have substance to them and help to drive this story in a direction which keeps you engaged throughout.

The enter the hot, powerful but brooding male lead, and possible love interest, Iannis. What I loved about the book is that love is not the main theme of the story, but we are getting a slow build up of sexual tension between the two characters. It contains those kind of scenes between the two where you feel your own cheeks staring to warm up with the intense attraction between them but just when you think something might happen they get interrupted. I actually love that kind of romance where theyre not immediately jumping on each other and are both fighting the attraction between them, but it's so strong that they keep finding themselves in situations where they're drawn to each other. So far nothing has happened between the two, but for me that makes the anticipation of something you feel for sure will happen so much sweeter, I just hope it's not drawn out too long over the series as that can start to get boring.

For me this first book in the series contained just the right amount of intrigue, mystery and romance. The female lead epitomises my favourite type of heroine in a book in that she is capable of defending herself and has a sometimes too snarky tongue (this is my favourite kind of character as I can't stand a simpering female who doesn't stand up for herself).

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it gets the full five stars from me. If you also love these types of books then I recommend picking it up. If you've never read a book like this before then I recommend this as the first one for you to pick up and try as I can guarantee you'll love it. Now I'm off to read the next book in the series be sure to look out for my review on that next.

Excerpt

He shook his head in despair. “I’m beginning to think I made a mistake trying to save you. You’re not going to make my life easy, are you?” I clutched my hands to my chest, giving him my best dreamy-eyed swoon. “Aww, you were trying to save me. You’re so sweet! And for the record, no, I’m not going to make your life easy. But hey,” I shrugged, “it was your choice. You could always save me by boxing him against the window and leaving me in peace.”

“Oh really? Maybe I’ll just go to the toilet instead and leave you to fend for yourself.” He kicked one leg out into the aisle, moving to stand. When his body shifted, it gave me another glimpse of the greasy-haired man who watched us from the corner of his eye and reached for his bag, as if ready to pounce as soon as Hazel … uh, Cole moved.

Throwing away all self-respect, I reached out and grabbed his wrist. “No!” He sniggered and collapsed back against the seat with a smirk. “So you do need saving.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “You’re cruel.” “Sweetheart, you don’t know me, remember? Don’t sound so surprised.” My jaw dropped at his words and my gaze shifted nervously around the carriage. Maybe I was better off taking my chances with the other guy. I swallowed hard.

“I’m not your sweetheart.”

“Would you prefer it if I called you Ice Queen or Gingernut instead? Because I didn’t think those would go over as well.” Glowering at him for flipping my line back around on me, I folded my arms across my chest. I refused to rise to his teasing and ask why those names. Gingernut obviously came from the way my hair changed colour in the sun.

However, Ice Queen could have been because of a number of things. “This is the part where you’re supposed to give me your name,” he prompted when I didn’t respond. “You could always not talk to me. Problem solved.” “Sweetheart it is.”
